Loving murder shows has become as basic as avocado toast and rosé. What started with Chris Hansen’s chilling baritone on Dateline has evolved to Netflix obsessions like Making a Murderer and The Keepers and morbidly fascinating podcasts like Serial and My Favorite Murder. It can be easy for viewers to forget, in the midst of the scintillating, binge-watchable drama, that murder shows are about real lives lost, and that the “cast of characters” (judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and suspects) are real people, too, with consequences that extend far beyond the courthouse.
